Description: The Elizabethan Gardens are a memorial to the first English colonists who came to North America in 1584-1587. Roanoke Island is where Sir Walter Raleigh made his initial attempts to colonize the New World under Queen Elizabeth I. History has immortalized these colonists as The Lost Colony.
These beautiful gardens were founded and are supported by the Garden Club of North Carolina, Inc., and have been featured in many landscape books and calendars. The Elizabethan Gardens is one of the finest examples of gardens of this period.
Directions: The Elizabethan Gardens is located on Roanoke Island within Fort Raleigh National Historic Site adjacent to Waterside Theatre, home of outdoor drama, 'The Lost Colony.'
